Obituary for Alvon William Besley

Penn Yan/Geneva – Alvon William Besley, age 88, of Penn Yan, passed away on Saturday (January 12, 2019) at Soldiers and Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan, NY.

Family and friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday (January 15th) at the McGuigan & Bero Funeral Home at 45 High Street in Geneva. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday (January 16th) 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Jeff Childs will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Geneva.

Alvon was born on January 15, 1930, in Elmira, NY, the son of the late William D. Besley and Mary Elizabeth Dennis. He married Virginia H. Griffee on June 30th, 1951. He was employed with Acme Markets for 40 years and retired in 1990. Virginia and Al enjoyed many years of camping in the Adirondack Mountains and Finger Lakes area with family and friends. In retirement they continued to camp and went to Myrtle Beach each winter. Alvon enjoyed woodworking and took that up as a hobby in retirement spending many hours in his workshop making furniture and clocks for family and friends.

Alvon is survived by sons, William (Donna) Besley of Mt. Gilead, NC, Douglas (Mary Ann) of Little Marsh, Penn.; daughters; Karen (Lynn) Axtell of Penn Yan, Lucinda (Earl) Davis of Waterloo; grandchildren, Robert (Helen) Besley , Rebecca (Doug Clark) Birnbaum, Christina (David) Dresser, Candice ( Adam) Freeman, Luke (Chelsea Scott) Davis, and Nicholas Besley; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Maya Besley, Boone McCoy and Ella Besley, Whitney, Brianna and Travis Birnbaum, Skylar Nasued, Bradley Smith and Carson Davis; sister-in-law, Suzanne Guererri ; brother Charles (Carol) Gantz; sister-in-law Veda Gantz; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased besides his parents and wife by brothers, Floyd Besley, Kenneth Besley, Robert Gantz, and Frederick Gantz. An infant sister, Virginia and grandson, Brett Davis.

His family wishes to thank the staffs at Clinton Crest Manor, The Homestead and Soldiers and Sailors Hospital for their passionate care for the past several years.
