Obituary for Janice M. Marquart

GENEVA- Janice M. Marquart, age 84, of Geneva passed away on Friday January 8, 2021 at the Geneva Living Center North.

Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m.to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday (Jan 16) at the McGuigan & Bero Funeral Home 45 High St. Geneva. Funeral Services will follow the calling hours at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Pastor Dave Spencer will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Waterloo.

Janice was born on August 26, 1936 in Waterloo the daughter of the late John H. and Emma J. (Merithew) Mattison. Growing up on a farm in Lodi before moving to Waterloo in her senior year in high school, Jan always loved animals, raising horses, goats and dogs and continued that as an adult. She always had a dog by her side, loved hummingbirds, cardinals, dogs and chipmunks.

As a child she was deeply affected by the depression. She was born into a farm family in Lodi and they struggled as everyone did. At five her family was thrust into WWII having many members serve in the US Navy and at age 9 lost a brother as a Navy Pilot.

She met her husband, Robert in 1956 and they were married in 1957. They spent almost 39 years together raising their family. In 1996 she became a widow and turned to volunteering her spare time to help others
Janice was a member of the Red Hatters, a volunteer at Genesee Region Home Care Hospice and for many years volunteered at Seneca Nursing Home, helping make the day brighter for many senior citizens.
She also could be seen frequently with her faithful companion Treena taking morning walks at Seneca Lake State Park, later carried on by another rescue dog Sasha. Throughout her life Janice had worked at many different jobs including Shuron Optical, Seneca Army Depot, Waterloo Taxi, The Stop and retired after a long career as a member of the Data Processing Team at the Seneca County office building where she met many lifelong friends.

In her later years she enjoyed going for a meal at the Astoria in Phelps and John Wayne movies. She was known by many as the Waterloo Newsstand lady, spending many years selling lottery tickets and newspapers to early morning customers while occasionally driving a taxi.

She is survived by her children, Dana Marquart (Ruth), Diane Marquart (Roger Sachs), Darryl Marquart (Shelly); grandchildren, Michael Bajdas (Stacey Patrick), Missie Schreier (Will Breen), Tyler Marquart, Hallie Marquart, Steven Marquart (Steph), Lisa VanTassell, Rob Marquart (Chelsea), Kerri Wood (Bryan); great-grandchildren, Dakota and Mickaila Bajdas, Alexia Hyer, Delyliah Schreier, Sam Breen, Bradley Marquart, Aleaha and Harley VanTassell, Lydia Wood; great-great-granddaughter, Liliee Dye; brother-in-law, Doyle Marquart (Jean); special friend, Debra Vanni (Norm Ridley), several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Janice was predeceased by her parents, John and Emma; husband Robert Marquart; siblings, Earl “Mike”, Bud “Francis”, Warren, Donnall, Beatrice, Phyllis.
