Obituary for Joan Miriam Lynch

GENEVA- Joan Miriam Lynch, 83, of Geneva, died on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Geneva General Hospital.

Born in Geneva to Marguerite (Brennan) and John Broderick Lynch, Joan was an athletic child, and upon her graduation from DeSales High School in 1956, she was the school’s all-time leader in points for the girls’ varsity basketball team. She attended the College of Mount Saint Vincent and the Columbia University School of Nursing before graduating from William Smith College in 1961.

She spent most of her professional career as a social worker for Geneva General Hospital, rising to the position of director. She was known for being level-headed and helpful during patients’ and families’ difficult times. Among other innovative programs, Joan founded Mobile Meals (later Meals on Wheels) to deliver nutritious meals to the homebound. She retired in the 1990s.

She was a tremendous golfer, winning many club championships at Seneca Lake Country Club starting when she was in her mid-teens, and always faring well in the Tri-County Golf Association tournaments. She continued to play in her later years at Clifton Springs Country Club.
She also was a supporter of Hobart College athletics, and could usually be seen at football and lacrosse games.

In her retirement, she enjoyed conquering difficult crossword and jigsaw puzzles, reading (in particular Louise Penny books), traveling with friends and watching sports--especially Syracuse University men’s basketball, because a young Jim Boeheim once caddied for her in a tournament.

She is survived by her sister, Barbara Lynch Springstead; nephew William Springstead (Carrie Curvin) and their children Noah and Alison; first cousins Patricia (Brennan) Culkin (Frank), Robert Brennan Jr., John Brennan, Barbara (Brennan) Fahey (Gene), Tom Brennan (Anne Cahill-Brennan), Jane (Brennan) Maher (Dan), Sally Brennan, James Brennan (Kathy Deporter) and numerous second and third cousins.

A memorial service will be held at McGuigan & Bero Funeral Home 45 High St. Geneva on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. Calling hours will be held that day from 10-11. Interment of ashes will be held immediately after at St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Beverly Animal Shelter 50 E. River St. Waterloo, NY 13165.
