Obituary for John R. VonBergen

GENEVA- John R. VonBergen, age 74, of Geneva passed away on Tuesday August 9, 2022 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

John was born in Waterloo, NY on August 16, 1947 the son of the late John “Jack” and Marjorie (Ellison) VonBergen. He graduated from Waterloo High School and attended Alfred University. John served in the US Army during the Vietnam era as a Military Police Officer in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He retired from Xerox of Webster in 2008 with 35 years of employment.
John was a member and Past Commander of the Geneva American Legion Winnek Post #396 and throughout the years he served on several committees. He was a lifetime member of the MacDougall Sportsman Club. John had a great sense of adventure, he would never turn down a water slide, an amusement park ride or a zip line. He loved golfing, Euchre League, fishing, hunting, yard work, cruising yearly with dear friends and going to the Legion every afternoon.

John loved his Family very much. He and his wife Noreen recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Spending time with his family was important to him and he was delighted when his son Anthony and Family moved back to the area to be with him during his Parkinson’s journey. John was always so proud of his Children and never hesitated to let you know. To his Grand children he was “Papa” and he quickly decided they were “keepers”.

He is survived by his wife Noreen Scalise VonBergen; son, Anthony (Aimee) VonBergen of Stanley; grandchildren Axl and Zelda VonBergen; sister, Brenda VonBergen-Ritchie; sister-in-law JoEllen (John) Scherra of Geneva; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

John was predeceased by his precious daughter, Heather Anne VonBergen PhD.

In honoring John’s wishes there will be no calling hours or service. Burial will take place in Glenwood Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions in his memory can be made to American Legion Winnek post 396, Geneva or a charity of choice.

The Family would like to thank the Neighbors and Friends for their help and support during John’s illness.
