Obituary for Michael William Meyers

Michael William Meyers, of Hopewell, New York, died on Thursday, September 16, 2021, at home.
Mike slipped away, surrounded by the love of family, after a valiant and heroic battle with Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma. He displayed his characteristic tenacity and gentle good nature as he struggled with this relentless and unforgiving monster.

Calling hours will be Sunday, September 26 from 2:00 - 5:00 at McGuigan-Bero Funeral Home, 45 High Street, Geneva. At the convenience of the family, a Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.

Mike was born on November 6th, 1970 in Canandaigua, the son of John and Nancy (Cooley) Meyers. He was a 1989 graduate of Midlakes High School, attended FLCC, and worked for many years as a Teaching Assistant in the Electrical Trades, Automotive Technology, and Diesel Technology classes at Finger Lakes Technical and Career Center in Flint. Mike also worked at Chase Pitkin for many years and was often recognized while out and about for his exceptional customer service and guidance in the Plumbing Department.

He leaves behind his bereft and loving wife, Kathleen (Kean) Meyers; his sons William and Christopher, both at home; his parents, John and Nancy (Cooley) Meyers; sister Suzanne (Emerick) Raes, nephews Matthew and Evan Raes, sisters-in-law Sybil Kean, Victoria (Bram) Lehman, and brother-in-law Richard (Valerie) Kean, many cousins, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews; last but not least, his cat Tigger, who rarely left his side.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents William and Winifred Meyers and maternal grandparents Howard and Emily Cooley, and by his cousins Timothy Cooley, Scott Cooley, Tom Mables, and Patti (Mables) DeWolf.

Mike will be remembered by all who knew him as a deeply intelligent and quiet man who went about his daily tasks with good cheer and a general sense of optimism. He loved maintaining and improving his home and property, and was a great classic car and antique tractor enthusiast. He also appreciated and collected signage and advertising memorabilia of all kinds.

Mike cherished time with Kathleen and his two growing sons as well as his immediate and extended family and friends. He was salt of the earth, humble yet proud, and beloved by those who knew him. A gifted, dedicated lifelong educator, Mike (or as many called him “Meyers”) not only taught his students how to succeed in the trades, but also modeled good behavior. He saw his role as one of guiding young people into productive and responsible lives. His friends, coworkers, and students past and present, all share his family’s grief at his passing.

Mike was a kind and forgiving soul, to the end. Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma is a brutal, unrelenting, and malevolent disease. It is tragically ironic that Mike died of this cancer, the very antithesis of his personality. Consequently, the family graciously requests that memorial contributions may be made to the following: Director, National Cancer Institute, Building 31, Room 11A-16, 9000 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, Maryland 20892; in memory of Michael Meyers to benefit programs run by Dr.Jaydira delRivero or Dr. Jonathan Hernandez, where Mike was treated with the greatest care and compassion.
