Obituary for Michael G. "Mickey" Peters

Michael G. Peters
GENEVA-Surrounded by his family, Michael G. Peters (fondly known as Mickey, or as “Pepa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren) passed away peacefully at F.F. Thompson Hospital on April 30, 2023 at the age of 95.

Mickey, son of the late George and Katherine Peters, was born in Geneva, N.Y. He graduated from Rochester Business Institute in 1948 and spent thirty-four years as a financial advisor at Shearson Lehman Brothers before retiring in 1993 as a vice president. Prior to his career in finance, Mickey worked with his father at, and eventually became the owner of, Peters Ice Cream – a popular eatery in downtown Geneva.

He will be remembered by anyone who knew him for his quick wit, love of jokes and storytelling, but most of all for his dedication to, and adoration of, his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Marcia Bartlett, in 1950 and was her devoted life partner and best friend for over seventy-five years. Upon retirement, he and Marcia spent the winter months living in Fort Myers Beach, Florida – times he truly cherished. He did not let the fair weather go to waste, as Mickey enjoyed many sports, playing racquetball, tennis, basketball, and golf well into his retirement years.

Mickey enjoyed using his skills to serve his community through volunteer work. For example, he enriched the assets of the Scholarship Fund for the Geneva Rotary club and managed their stock portfolio for many years, audited the financial records for the First Baptist Church of Geneva, and served on the boards of directors of the Geneva YMCA, Seven Lakes Girl Scout Council, Geneva Growth, and the Geneva Country Club. Likewise, his organizational memberships included the American Legion (seventy years!), Rotary Club, Geneva Lodge Masons, the Geneva Presbyterian Church, Geneva Country Club, and the Geneva Historical Society.
Mickey was a combat veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1950-1952. He earned the rank of sergeant, achieved marksman qualification with both rifle and carbine, and was awarded a combat infantry badge and a service bar. He felt privileged to travel to Washington, D.C. for recognition as an Honor Flight attendee.

Mickey is survived by his beloved wife Marcia (Bartlett); son Michael G. Peters, Jr., daughter Cynthia Bero (Steven); grandchildren Nicholas Bero (Jeanine), Stefanie Bero Perry (Stephen); great-grandchildren Adrian and Ainsley Bero, Micah Shmilovich, and Luca Perry, as well as many dear cousins.

There was a private burial with military honors held on May 8, 2023. A celebration of life service will be held on June 19th at the Geneva Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m.
