Robert was born on January 28, 1934 in DeWitt, MI the son of the late Franklyn Hipelius and Nelle Mae (Hunt) Balluff. He grew up on a farm in DeWitt, MI and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953-1957. Robert was an Engineer working for Walker Manufacturing (Tenneco) in Grass Lake, MI and retired from Dana Corp. (formerly Echlin) in Branford, CT.
He enjoyed reading science magazines, watching science shows. Had a keen interest in science, was a patient man who took time to explain and always a willing helper to children and grandchildren. He preferred to fix things rather than being in favor of new and enjoyed having the grandchildren spend summers.
As part of his career he traveled, visiting several countries as well as visits to the Caribbean and Mexico with his wife. He and his wife were drawn to the Finger Lakes by a visit to Sampson State Park, site of his Air Force basic training. They found the area beauty as a perfect retirement spot overlooking Seneca Lake. He planted 500 red pine and 500 white pine seedlings on a hog back ridge on the family farm in Leslie, MI as a Future Farmers of America project. The trees stand today as a testament of his love and respect for the land.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Ellen Balluff; children, Jill (Tim) Sprang of Michigan Center, MI, William (Sue) Balluff of Pleasant Lake, MI, step-son, Jack (Laura) Teatsworth of League City, TX; 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (Patti) Balluff of Mesa, AZ.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, Franklyn and Nelle; sisters, Jean and Maxine; brothers, William and Franklyn.
