Obituary for Serena McConnell

Serena McConnell, 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday May 16, 2021 at Keuka Comfort Care Home. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Keuka Comfort Care Home, as well as Ontario-Yates Hospice for their loving care in the final days of Serena’s life.

Serena was born on February 8, 1935, and was a lifelong resident of Geneva. She worked at J.W. Smith, a department store in Geneva for many years. After J. W. Smith’s closing in 1977, she worked at Stanley’s bridal and clothing store, and subsequently at Guard’s Cards, a Hallmark store.

Serena was an avid fan baseball fan. Her favorite team was the New York Mets. She collected Mets memorabilia, and even had a life size cardboard cutout of one of her favorite Mets players, Mike Piazza. She was also a New York Yankees fan, but would only root for the Yankees if they were not playing the Mets. Back in the day, when Geneva had a Single A minor league baseball team, Serena was a season ticket holder, and saw many major leaguers get their start in professional baseball.

Serena also loved teddy bears and was gifted many, many teddy bears, resulting in an extensive teddy bear collection.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Cisco and her husband, Rick King; her brother, Bob Fischer; her niece, Nancee Fischer and her husband, Tracy St Phillip; nephews Bill (Shelly) and Tim (Darolyn) Fischer; as well as her many friends and neighbors.

Serena was pre-deceased by her parents, William and Helen Fischer, her husband Hilliard (Andy) McConnell, as well as her subsequent loving companion, Carl Northup.

Arrangements are being handled by McGuigan & Bero Funeral Home. Per Serena’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Burial will be at Brookside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Keuka Comfort Care Home, 35 State Route 54, Penn Yan, New York 14527.
