Obituary for Sybil W. Amico (Walker)

GENEVA/CANANDAIGUA- Sybil Walker Amico passed away surrounded by loved ones in her home on Thursday November 24, 2022.

The only child of Ted and Myrtle Walker, Sybil was born July 25, 1936, in Gastonia, North Carolina. She graduated from Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina, and moved to Upstate New York to complete an advanced degree in Education at Syracuse University.

Sybil taught in Penn Yan and later in Geneva as a beloved first grade teacher at West Street Elementary School, where she gave hundreds of children a great start in their educations. As she said in a recent interview about her 32-year teaching career, “I love the honesty and thought process of six-year-olds. They are so sincere, and that's wonderful.”

In her retirement Sybil continued to enjoy reading, gardening, and delicious cooking. Sybil is remembered as a master teacher, dedicated mentor and loving friend.

A graveside memorial service is scheduled with the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (PISGAH) in Gastonia later in the season. In lieu of flowers or cards, please consider making a contribution in Sybil's honor to the Geneva Free Library.
