Obituary for William H. Koelbel

GENEVA- William H. Koelbel (Bill), age 96, of Geneva passed away on Thursday June 9, 2022 at the Geneva Living Center North.

Family and friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday (June 13) at the McGuigan & Bero Funeral Home, 45 High St., Geneva. Members of the Hydrant Hose Co. will meet at the funeral home at 5:00 p.m. and members of the Knights of Columbus will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday (June 14) with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemeter with full Military Honors.

Bill was born on May 31, 1926 in Hempstead, NY, the son of the late Joseph and Amelia Koelbel. He served in the US Naval Air Corps during WWII. He married Marie Shunk in 1950 and they had six children. He was owner of Waterfront Consultants & Dock Hardware and did marine consulting work throughout the Eastern Seaboard.

He was a member of St. Stephen’s Church, American Legion Post 396 Geneva, Geneva Council #272 Knights of Columbus, Bishop John E. McCafferty Assembly 4th degree of the Knights of Columbus.

He grew up on Long Island, fishing, hunting and building wooden boats. He was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers fan and would sometimes skip school to watch the games. The headmaster of Bishop McLoughlin High School would forgive the absence as long as he was able to recount the innings and various plays during the game.
William and Marie loved to travel to visit their children and grandchildren and enjoyed their cottage on Seneca Lake.

He is survived by four of his children; William Koelbel, Susan Koelbel, Margaret Merrill and Joan Koelbel. His grandchildren are Christopher and Ryan Merrill, Emily Haranas and Ethan Koelbel. His great-grandchildren are Brooke and Allison Merrill, Ella and Nia Haranas and Olive Koelbel.

Bill was predeceased by his wife, Marie and children, James and Maria Koelbel.
