Painting

I remember back in about 1970 or so, Dad was working on Painting the family home at 20 Genesee Street.   Of course, I was always his shadow (and in his way most of the time), so I was there watching.  Now he could not afford to own an extension ladder, so he borrowed an aluminum one from some, that was well used.

He was near the top of the extended ladder painting the trim on the windows of the front second story, when I remember him suddenly start to move.  SIDEWAYS!

The Ladder, and my father, were litterally sliding to the left, accross the front of the house.   It hapened so fast, but I watched my father trying to climb down the ladder as it was sliding, but within millaseconds, the ladder was off of the house and Dad had only made it about 5 rungs lower.   He clung to the ladder with his arms, and rode it down untill he landed.

SMACK DAB INTO THE LONG ROW OF PRICKER BUSHES BETWEEN OUR HOUSE AND THE NEIGHBORS DRIVEWAY.   Thankfully, as the bushes broke his fall and he was not hurt.  That is except the hundreds of prickers I had to pluck from his skin for about the next hour, that is!

After the fall and taking inventory of himself, with prickers sticking from his body everywhere, he inspected the ladder.   The left side ground contact below the last rung, had just bent causing the ladder to collapse to that side.

It was a funny sight to see my Dad struggleing to get out of the middle of those pricker bushes I can tell you, once I realized he was unhurt.
