Obituary

SARATOGA SPRINGS- Andrew “Andy” Loomis Welch died peacefully on April 28th in White Plains, NY, at age 76. He was born on May 27th, 1943, and would become the second-oldest of seven boys lovingly and patiently raised by Mary McGrew and Charles Welch. Andy attended DeSales High School in Geneva, NY, and later went on to obtain master's degrees from Boston University (in literature) and St. Lawrence University (in counseling). He served in the US military — stationed in Korea — from 1960 to 1963 before returning home with an honorable discharge.

Andy was the proprietor of The Wild Oat tavern in Potsdam, NY, from 1976 to 1981. The establishment drew a warmhearted crowd and served as a venue for live music performances that locals still remember to this day. Andy eventually relocated to Saratoga Springs, NY, where he spent years forging new friendships both as a bartender and educator. His quiet, contemplative demeanor was backed with charming wit and invaluable wisdom.

An avid golfer and reader, Andy breathed literature to a greater extent than most and formed lifelong interests in poetry and Native American history. Andy cared deeply for the earth we all share and participated in environmental activism to help protect its future. Jazz music was another of his great passions, whether it was the strong voice of Nina Simone or the unforgettable tone of Miles Davis. Andy was a beloved son, brother, and uncle who cherished spending time with his family in the North Country every summer.

Predeceased by his parents, brothers Johnny and David, and sister-in-law Wendy, Andrew is survived by brothers Jerry, Tim, Chip, and Michael; nieces Mollie, Quinn, and Lily; and nephews Michael, William, and Christopher. His gentle, inquisitive spirit remains with us now and always.

A celebration of Andrew’s life will take place when circumstances permit at Sylvia Lake. Those who wish to attend may contact Michael Welch at (315) 267-6883.
